PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This 6 minute video highlights the surgical treatment of temporal bone spontaneous CSF leak and encephalocele by way of the middle cranial fossa approach. Spontaneous CSF leaks have dramatically increased in incidence over the past two decades due to rising obesity and obesity-related conditions such as sleep apnea and intracranial hypertension.
The purpose is to ensure Otolaryngologists can recognize/diagnose a spontaneous CSF leak and differentiate it from other forms of chronic ear disease. In addition, Otolaryngologists should understand the technical aspects of repairing the tegmen to treat a spontaneous CSF leak.
This video shows full access to the entire skull base floor over the temporal bone with high levels of surgical success. This case highlights the use of bone cement to aid in repair.
