(008) A Scoping Review of Leadership Training Curriculum for Otolaryngology Residents

Introduction: Otolaryngologists are expected to lead operating rooms, multidisciplinary teams, and provider groups to achieve optimal outcomes, yet leadership training in otolaryngology residency is not well defined. This review explores the current state of leadership curricula for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residents.

Methods: A comprehensive scoping review of English language, full text, peer-reviewed articles that describe leadership curricula for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residents was conducted. The review describes curriculum settings, content, delivery methods and assessment; curriculum effectiveness was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick effectiveness score.

Results: A total of 2417 articles met search criteria, 201 articles were included for full-text review and four articles were included in the final analysis. Curriculum content and delivery methods were diverse. Curriculum cadence ranged from two-day immersion trainings to year-long longitudinal programs. Only one of the included studies utilized a needs assessment to inform curriculum development. Two out of the four articles utilized pre and post surveys and achieved Kirkpatrick effectiveness scores of 2, indicating changes in the attitudes or perceptions among participants.

Conclusions: Our findings reveal the limited and nonuniform state of leadership training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residency. These data are in line with descriptions of leadership training in other surgical residencies which have been reported as heterogenous and lacking in effectiveness. This review highlights the need for standardized leadership training for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery residents. Lastly, the infrequent yet high-quality leadership development initiatives within graduate medical education are reviewed to inform future directions for effective curriculum development and assessment.
