Tyler Chan is a lifelong learner with an international perspective and a commitment to public service.
Tyler is currently an M.D. candidate at the Emory University School of Medicine and a Robert W. Woodruff Fellow. Originally from Toronto, Canada, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago where he earned a Bachelor of Science, studying neuroscience and history. Upon graduating from college and before matriculating as a medical student, he traveled across the pond and spent a year in the United Kingdom to pursue a Master of Philosophy in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge.
Tyler’s interest in medicine was sparked during his days as a jazz saxophonist by his fascination with the role of music in the treatment of neurological conditions. While he continues to play the saxophone occasionally and definitely continues to listen to recordings of his favorite music ensemble, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, his passion for the arts and humanities has more recently manifested in other realms. Throughout his career in academia and medicine in North America, Europe, and Asia, he has taught music to elementary school students, worked alongside patients with communication deficits, and conducted research in the history of medicine and in medical ethics.
