Alan R. Schwartz MD, Adjunct Professor, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University
Dr. Schwartz has investigated mechanisms of sleep disordered breathing with a special emphasis on novel approaches to the diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnea. He has a longstanding record of developing physiologic tools for assessing the severity and mechanisms of upper airway obstruction during sleep, and for treating sleep apnea with hypoglossal and other nerve stimulation strategies. He has extensive experience developing clinical and animal models of sleep disordered breathing with special emphasis on elucidating pathogenic mechanisms and consequences of this disorder. He is an author of over 175 articles and inventor on 3 patents. He is an established investigator with record of continuous NIH funding for over 30 years. Before retiring from Johns Hopkins in February, 2019, Dr. Schwartz served as the Co-Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Sleep Research and Education (CISRE) and Director of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Center at Bayview Medical Center. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania, Part-time faculty in Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
