Richard E. Hayden MD is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Mayo Clinic Arizona. After completing his Otolaryngology residency at the University of Toronto and fellowships at MD Anderson (Head and Neck Oncology) and Princess Margaret (Radiation Oncology), Dr. Hayden practiced as a Head and Neck surgeon at Toronto General Hospital until 1983 when he relocated to Washington University in St. Louis. In 1991, he moved to the University of Pennsylvania to establish the Center for Head and Neck Cancer and to serve as Vice-Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. In 1995, he became Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology in the MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine. In 2002, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to become Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Dr. Hayden has devoted his career to head and neck oncology with a career-long special emphasis on complex and microvascular reconstructive techniques. He has provided national and international training in microsurgery and head and neck reconstruction and has mentored a Head and Neck Microvascular Fellowship Program since 1984. Another significant ongoing interest has been the creation of specialized tissues and organs from stem cells for replacement and rehabilitation of damaged tissues. As the Education Director for the Center for Regenerative Medicine of the Mayo Clinic Enterprise, Dr. Hayden coordinates the development and implementation of programs in Regenerative Medicine for the medical, postgraduate and allied health schools.
