PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Description: Plating technology has dramatically improved the ability to repair maxillofacial bony trauma with optimal outcomes. A plethora of techniques allow for the rapid reduction and reconstruction of traumatic bony defects at various anatomic sites. Familiarity with these reconstructive paradigms is usually gained during residency through a variety of live hands on workshops known as saw bone labs. These workshops use fabricated skulls and mandibles to simulate various fracture patterns or ablative defects. A variety of plates in different sizes, strengths, and thicknesses are utilized to reconstruct and repair the simulated defects. Similar to the temporal bone lab, simulation in this setting allows for the development of a technical skill set in a practice environment.
This saw bones lab will simulate a variety of common and unusual fractures that can be encountered in every day practice. Plating systems will be available to practice hands on reduction and internal fixation of these simulated fractures. The ability to create ablative defects and reconstruct with bridging plate technology will also be undertaken. A diverse multi-institutional faculty will permit a unique educational experience given the extensive and variety of experiences. Two attendees per workstation will have access to a broad range of skulls, mandibles, and technical instrumentation. This simulation course can be utilized to develop a new skill set or refresh old skills.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Demonstrate understanding of the various fracture patterns that may Commonly encountered trauma in the head and neck

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate understanding of current paradigms in the management of bony trauma fixation.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Attendees will be able to utilize contemporary plating technology to reduce and reconstruct traumatic bony disruptions of the maxillomandibular area.
