Pains in the Neck: Treating Globus Pharyngeus

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This course will provide a comprehensive, case-based, and evidence-based review of globus pharyngeus. Potential etiologies of this condition will be emphasized, so that participants can broaden their differential diagnosis of globus pharyngeus beyond reflux alone. Approaches to refluxdiagnosis and treatment will be evaluated. Additional considerations of mucosal dryness, sinonasal inflammation, cricopharyngeal hypertonicity /esophageal dysmotility, sensory neuropathy / hypersensitivity, and globus hystericus will also be discussed. Therapeutic and diagnostic approaches to each etiology will be presented, generating a treatment algorithm for this frustrating condition that can provide patients and physicians a pathway to increased satisfaction.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand differential diagnosis for globus pharyngeus, and apply a step-wise, algorithmic approach to management.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Discuss the limitations of focusing solely on reflux in treatment of globus pharyngeus.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Appreciate other therapeutic and diagnostic avenues that may increase patient and provider satisfaction in globus pharyngeus care.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Globus pharyngeus is commonly encountered in clinical practice, and can be frustrating both to patient and Otolaryngologist, especially if PPI are unsuccessful. This course's "roadmap" approach has been well-received at prior AAO-HNSF meetings, with large audiences and good ratings.
