A Puzzling Night on Call: An Otolaryngology Escape Room Experience?

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Game-based learning has gained a lot of attention recently as a better way to engage learners and create active learning environments. One particular area of game-based learning has been getting established in nursing education and making its way into medical education, escape rooms. Escape rooms are a series of puzzles or skill-based tasks that can be added together to create a real or virtual environment to create, consolidate, and demonstrate knowledge and skills. This educational experience will be an interactive application of game-based learning design. Escape rooms can offer opportunities for team building and experiential learning in a fun and challenging way. This educational offering will utilize logic-based puzzles and skill-based simulation tasks to challenge teams to compete for scores and time to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Synthesize their relevant clinical knowledge in otolaryngology to solve puzzles and answer trivia questions.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Apply their relevant otolaryngology psychomotor skills in managing simulated tasks.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Demonstrate teamwork and collaborative non-technical skills to effectively manage a sequence of puzzles, questions, and clinical scenarios.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Medical education is looking for ways to engage its learners. This experience could show the power of GBL and escape rooms and follow-up sessions can educate on how to design for your local environment. These sessions do not need to be expensive or elaborate and can be relevant to any subject.
