(431) Retrospective Analysis of Postoperative Infections in Genioplasty with Silicone Implants

Introduction: Chin augmentation provides remarkable aesthetic improvement for patients seeking facial profile adjustment. However, no recent literature exists reporting longitudinal monitoring for postoperative infections after silicone chin implantation.

Methods: A retrospective clinical review of patients who underwent chin implantation performed by the senior author and his associates from 1998 to 2018 was conducted. Patient medical records were reviewed in January 2023. Operations were performed using Silastic implants for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes. No other concurrent procedures were performed locally. Patients were followed and monitored for postoperative infection of chin implants.

Results: Of the 168 patients who underwent alloplastic chin implantation, 8 of them (4.8%) had a documented infection postoperatively. Of those 8 patients, there were 5 patients (3.0%) that were successfully managed with antibiotics and 3 patients (1.8%) which required implant removal due to infection.

Conclusions: Silicone-based chin implantation is a safe and well-tolerated procedure that can enhance facial profiling through balanced augmentation. We report here postoperative infection rates from a single private practice group which support the overall safety and efficacy of chin implantation in cosmetic and reconstructive use.
