Professor Sommer is one of the leading sleep physicians in Europe with a strong focus on obstructive sleep apnea. This led to over 250 publications in international peer reviewed journals, book chapters and numerous conference talks.
In July 2016 he awarded a professorship at the University Heidelberg in Germany.
Beginning in June 2018 he was head of department of the clinic for ear, nose and throat medicine, head and neck surgery at the Helios University Clinic in Wuppertal, Germany and beforehand he worked as managing senior physician at the University ENT Clinic, Mannheim, Germany
Since 2020, the 42 year old moved his research activity to the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine, Head and Neck Surgery at the Klinikum rechts der Isar / Technical University of Munich in Germany and started his work at the ENT center Mangfall-Inn in Bad Aibling / Germany
