Robert Lorenz, M.D. is Medical Director of Payment Reform, Risk and Contracting for the Cleveland Clinic. He is an active Head & Neck surgeon in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the former Chief Medical Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.
In his current role as Medical Director of Payment Reform, Risk and Contracting, Dr. Lorenz participates in all aspects of the Cleveland Clinic’s efforts around healthcare payment innovation and served as the leader for the organization’s ICD-10 transformation. He directs the clinical aspects of revenue-related matters ($7.0bn), and works closely with Health Information Management to coordinate Cleveland Clinic physician involvement with innovative payment models. He represents the Cleveland Clinic as representative to Ohio State Medical Association’s Health System Physician Leadership Council.
On the national level, he sits on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, and is the Coordinator for Practice Affairs. As Coordinator, Dr. Lorenz negotiates relationships between the members of the Academy (12,000 Otolaryngologists) and the payor community, including CMS. His commitment to payment reform and wiliness to embrace alterative payment methodologies is apparent in his role as co-Chair of the Physician Payment Policy Committee for the Academy. He also is a member of the American College of Surgeons Health Policy and Advocacy Committee, which advocates for all surgeons in North America and their patients at the national level, and currently serves on the ACS Alternative Payment Model Task Force.
Dr. Lorenz received his undergraduate degree from Yale University with a Bachelors of Science in the field of Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. He completed his medical degree with Honors from the University of Rochester and completed his clinical training in Otolaryngology at the Cleveland Clinic and Vanderbilt University. He received an MBA with Distinction from London Business School.
