Sarah M. Russel, MD, MPH, is a PGY-4 resident physician and NIH T32 postdoctoral research fellow at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Sugery. During her dedicated research time, she earned her Master of Public Health while completing her postdoctoral research in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Her interests lie in using CFD to assess the efficacy of surgical techniques as well as public health, health equity, and LGBTQIA+ population health within otolaryngology. In particular, she has applied CFD to assess the pathophysiology and reconstructive techniques for cleft lip nasal deformities, non-cleft nasal airway obstruction, allergic rhinitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis. She is also working on projects that examine patient experiences with facial paralysis and outcomes from gender-affirming facial surgery. Her public health work has largely focused on health inequities within otolaryngology, such as LGBTQIA+ disparities in head and neck cancer prevalence and inequities in racial representation among otolaryngology trainees and faculty.
