Mark Swanson, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Southern California. My research focuses on clinical outcomes, predictors, and quality of life measures for head and neck cancer patients. I have published research in improving post-operative recovery using ERAS, developing protocols for improved swallowing after treatment, evaluation of nodal metastasis as predictors for cancer recurrence, and seriocomic and insurance factors in access to care.
Through my outcomes research, I have had a specific focus on improved postoperative recovery, improving discharge to home, and minimizing chronic opiate use. This has been done through work involving multimodal analgesia to reduce opioid use, and predictors of pain based on extent and type of reconstruction used. I am expanding this research to see how opioid sparing pain protocols impact future chronic opiate prescription use.
