Chareeni Kurukulasuriya is a 4th year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine currently applying to otolaryngology residency programs this year. She graduated from Yale University in 2016 with a BS in Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology. Prior to medical school, she worked at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center/Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for three years as a clinical trials coordinator in the bone marrow transplant department and graft-versus-host disease long term follow up clinic. There, she helped coordinate phase II/III clinical trials involving novel GVHD drug therapies as well as inpatient palliative care studies and outpatient mental health initiatives for BMT recipients. As a medical student at PittMed, she has served as a mental health peer counselor for her class through the Student Health Advocacy Resource Program, and she received a one-year funded position in the Clinical Scientist Training Program to complete clinical and translational research in the lab of her mentor Dr. Umamaheswar Duvvuri. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in otolaryngology, specifically in head and neck oncology, with a focus on improving both treatment and QOL outcomes for her patients through continued research.
