Johan Hellgren is Professor and senior ORL consultant at the Department of ORL, Head & Neck surgery at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg Sweden. He completed his ORL specialist training in ORL at Sahlgrenska in 1997 and he did a PhD in Rhinology at Gothenburg University in 2001. In 2006 he completed a post-doc fellowship at Sydney University in Australia and returned to Sahlgrenska for a position as Associate Professor in 2010. He was appointed full professor at the University of Gorthenburg in 2020 and has been the Head of the Academic Department of ORL at Sahlgrenska from 2010-2020.Professor Hellgren is the past president of the Swedish Rhinological Society (SRS) and of the Swedish Association for Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery (SFOHH) and The Nordic ORL Association. Professor Hellgren specialises in nose/sinus disease and facial trauma. In 2017 he hosted the XXIII Congress of the Nordic Association of Otolaryngology in Gothenburg Sweden. Professor Hellgrens research areas involve the role of upper airway inflammation (including CRS) for disease in the lower airways such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Also predictors and outcome in surgery to relieve upper airway obstruction such as septoplasty, as well as monitoring nasal air flow and resistance, including computerised flow dynamics (CFD). He has been the main supervisor for 4 previous PhD students and 3 ongoing PhD students.
