Otolaryngology Resident
Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School
Christopher I. McHugh, MD, PhD is a current PGY4 resident in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program. Originally from Livonia, Michigan, Dr. McHugh attended the University of Michigan where he received his degree in biochemistry. Following his undergraduate studies, he enrolled in the combined MD/PhD program at Wayne State University. As a graduate student, he studied the use of positron emission tomography imaging as a method for monitoring the response of cancer to chemotherapy.
During residency, Dr. McHugh has been actively involved in research under the guidance of Dr. Heidi Nakajima, focusing on various projects concerning the mechanics of the middle ear and inner ear. One noteworthy collaboration involves researchers from Columbia University and MIT, as they work together on developing fully implantable cochlear implants using middle ear microphones. Another area of Dr. McHugh's research involves exploring the application of optical coherence tomography to visualize the microanatomy of the human cochlea and understand how these structures respond to sound stimuli. Some of this work will be shared at the AAO-HNSF 2023 Annual Meeting. As an otolaryngologist, Dr. McHugh has a wide range of interests within the field and is contemplating a career in general otolaryngology or pursuing a fellowship in otology/neurotology.
Outside of medicine, Chris enjoys spending time with his wife Vidya, and their two Children, Maya and Neel.
