William (Willie) Benjamin, MPH is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is an aspiring otolaryngologist who is interested in medical education, translational research, and health services research. Willie earned his Master of Public Health degree in Molecular Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health prior to starting medical school. While working on his master’s thesis, he became interested in oncology. Specifically, Willie helped build a malignancy risk index for ovarian cancer using low cost and readily available lab tests. Since starting medical school, Willie’s research has included translational research about the microbiome and its relation to head and neck cancer, medical education research about the otolaryngology residency application process, and health services research involving acute ischemic stroke, pediatric inguinal hernia, and head and neck cancer.
