PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This simulation course will present detailed information about three common lasers used in otolaryngology in the treatment of mucosal lesions: CO2, Nd:YAG, and TruBlue lasers. Similarities and differences in their laser physics, clinical applications, safety precautions, and setup will be discussed. Simulation using these three lasers along with various laser fibers for application will be performed by the hands-on participations using raw tissue/organic materials as testing media. Unique case presentations will be shared to demonstrate clinical applications for each laser, mostly in oral, oropharyngeal, and laryngeal lesions. Each participant will gain knowledge about each laser and be able to demonstrate their safe application.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Compare and contrast the CO2, Nd:YAG and TruBlue lasers in their laser physics, safety precautions, clinical applications, laser settings and fiber selection.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate competency in safe setup and application of the CO2, Nd:YAG and TruBlue lasers.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Recognize advantages and disadvantages of the CO2, Nd:YAG and TruBlue lasers.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Lasers in otolaryngology is a deficient educational area. New technologies are available in our field, including the TruBlue laser (FDA approved 2022). It is important for otolaryngologists to know these lasers: advantages/disadvantages, similarities/differences, applications.
