PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Otitis media is one of the most common reasons for physician visits, antibiotic therapy, and surgery in children. This course will summarize the best published evidence from over 40 years of otitis media research, emphasizing guidelines, randomized trials, systematic reviews, and new research published during the past 12 months. Topics will include acute otitis media, recurrent acute otitis media, otitis media treatment failures, otitis media with effusion, and surgical management (tympanostomy tubes and adenoidectomy). Emphasis is placed on pragmatic advice for everyday practice settings.
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Assess current treatment paradigms and guidelines for managing children with otitis media
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Integrate recent high-quality clinical research on otitis media into routine patient care
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Combine current best evidence and shared decision making for optimal clinical outcomes
BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Otitis media is an exceptionally common disorder encountered by otolaryngologists in all practice settings. I have presented this course annually since 2001 with excellent attendance and consistently above-average audience ratings.
