PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This course will describe the clinical presentation and evaluation of temporal bone cancer. Primary ear canal and temporal bone tumors will be described along with temporal bone involvement from parotid and periauricular cancers. A treatment approach is described based on experience with over 600 patients with this disease. Topics for discussion include lateral temporal bone resection, management of the facial nerve, the role of parotidectomy and neck dissection. Emphasis is placed on a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Complications and rehabilitation strategies will also be discussed.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: To describe the clinical presentation and evaluation of temporal bone cancer.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: To describe a management scheme for temporal bone cancer.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: To discuss treatment outcomes for temporal bone cancer.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Temporal bone tumors are rare and often present in an advanced stage. Physicians need to be aware of the sign and symptoms that point to this diagnosis and to understand the proper diagnostic and management strategies.
