PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This course will present a novel set of new landmarks to assist sinus surgeons as they navigate the maze of sinonasal anatomy: 1) turbinate pump, 2) maxillary-ethmoid plate, 3) sphenoid line, 4) Ting's triangle, 5) El Toro sign. Experience in teaching residents and fellows the art of rhinology for over 25 years has demonstrated the usefulness of these structures in the performance of safe and effective sinus surgery. Material presented in this course will be relevant to both novice and seasoned surgeons.
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Recognize five new landmarks to enhance the performance of endoscopic sinus surgery
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Describe the importance of the turbinate pump and maxillary-ethmoid plate to enhance endoscopic access during sinus surgery
OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Utilize the sphenoid line and El Toro signs in the surgical treatment of patients with sphenoid and frontal sinus disease
BACKGROUND STATEMENT: A new set of landmarks has been developed during the training of otolaryngology residents and fellows in the art of sinus surgery. Experience has demonstrated the usefulness of these structures to enhance the safety and efficacy of such surgery.
