(082) Characteristics of Nonsmokers Under 50 with Oral Cavity Cancer

Introduction: Oral cavity cancer in younger patients has been reported at an increased incidence in recent years, appearing at higher rates in patients without significant exposures compared to older populations. Currently there is mixed data without significant evidence for precipitating factors for this population.

Methods: After IRB approval, a retrospective chart review was conducted on patients diagnosed with oral cavity cancer at the age of 50 years old or younger.

Results: There were 121 that met criteria, 7 of which were excluded given lack of care beyond initial consultation. There were 38 patients (33%) who never had any tobacco exposure and 8 (7%) with less than 5 pack year history. The remaining 68 (60%) are current tobacco or betel nut users or prior users with a significant history. Within the limited to now exposure group, the average age was 42 years old with 26 patients (68%) presenting with a T1 or T2 lesion and 27 (71%) that were clinically or pathologically N0. The average follow up was 4.33 years with 8 patients (21%) having persistence or local recurrence and 6 patients (13%) dying of their disease. The group with notable tobacco or betel nut exposure had an average age of 44 with 43 patients (63%) presenting with a T1 or T2 lesion and 45 (66%) that were clinically/pathologically N0. The average follow up was 4.24 years with 22 patients (32%) having persistence or local recurrence and 9 patients (13%) dying of their disease. Looking specifically at dental work adjacent to the oral cavity cancer, 6 (13%) of the patients with limited exposure compared to 2 (3%) with significant tobacco or betel nut use had dental work near their oral cavity cancer prior to diagnosis, (p=0.059).

Conclusions: In our study we will review our cohort’s demographics and clinicopathologic characteristics, in addition to further exploring dental work in younger patients with oral cavity cancer. We will compare our population to published data.
