Introduction: Post nasal drip (PND) syndrome is a not-well defined condition involving mucus in the nasopharynx with conflicting literature regarding the legitimacy of the syndrome. This study aims to analyze the possibility of the existence of PND and classify it based on the location of mucus or saliva using nasal endoscopy results.

Methods: This retrospective and prospective case series studied adults above the age of 21 treated in a clinical setting beginning in May of 2022 until now. The study used nasal endoscopy to identify the presence of saliva or mucus in the locations of: Nasal cavity (NC), Inferior Turbinates (IT), Middle Meatus (MM), or Spehno-ethmoidal Recess (SER) to find if a relationship exists between the presence of a chief complaint of PND and the presence of mucus or saliva within the nasopharynx. Patient data were compiled and tests of association were completed to test for significant correlations between factors. This study did not involve any intervention for the subjects.

Results: Significant association was found between the presence of the chief complaint of PND and the presence of mucus (p=0.0038) in various locations (NC, IT, MM, SER) based on nasal endoscopic findings (n=103). Further analysis showed statistically significant associations between the location of the mucus within the nasopharynx (NC, IT, or MM) and additional comorbidities.

Conclusions: Based on our preliminary study, post nasal drip syndrome is indeed a syndrome that can be further classified categorically and associated with additional comorbidities based on the location of the mucus or saliva within the nasopharynx.
