(339) Novel 3D-Printed Nasal Models to Teach Medical Students to Scope

Introduction: Learning intranasal anatomy and rigid nasal endoscopy techniques can be both challenging and inaccessible to the medical student learner. Our aim was to validate an accessible and novel, hyper-realistic three-dimensional (3D) -printed nasal model as an effective and valuable educational tool for the medical student learner interested in Otolaryngology.

Methods: 3D anatomic models of the nasal cavity were constructed from selected patient CT scans. A study was conducted during a scheduled education session with the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine Otolaryngology Interest Group to evaluate the educational value of these models in teaching medical students how to perform rigid nasal endoscopy. Participation in the study was optional. Study participants were given a lecture on intranasal anatomy and basics of rigid endoscopy. They then performed several trials of endoscopy, during which they were tasked with finding basic intranasal structures on 3D-printed models and a cadaver specimen. Before, during, and after the session, the participants were administered surveys that gathered data on demographics, anatomic accuracy of the 3D models, and overall participant confidence in anatomic knowledge and skills. Three months later, the participants were sent a follow-up survey that gauged the impact of the session on medical student interest in Otolaryngology.

Results: Data will be collected on March 2, 2023. Our main outcomes measures will include: 1) Anatomic accuracy and integrity of our 3D-printed models in comparison to a cadaver specimen; 2) Impact of the model on medical student confidence scores regarding intranasal anatomy and their performance during assigned scoping tasks; and 3) Impact of the session and models on medical student interest in Otolaryngology.

Conclusions: We developed a novel 3D-Model that is an effective tool for teaching medical students the art of rigid nasal endoscopy. Scoping our model helped to improve medical student confidence in anatomic knowledge and scoping skills. Our education session also played a role in increasing medical student interest in a career in Otolaryngology.
