(350) Online Videos for Patient Education in Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery

Introduction: As Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery (ESBS) becomes an increasingly popular surgical technique, online videos may be a major resource that patients utilize to inform their medical decisions. We examined the reliability, quality, and understandability of ESBS Youtube videos for patient education as it relates to endoscopic skull base surgery.

Methods: A search for “endoscopic skull base surgery” was conducted on YouTube and the first 50 videos were screened for inclusion. Videos were categorized by source, intended audience, and location and assessed for reliability, quality, and understandability using the 4-item JAMA score, 14-item SPEQS, and 17-item PEMAT-A/V, respectively. Results were presented as descriptive statistics.

Results: After exclusion, 35 videos were kept for further analysis. Most videos were from academic institutions (94%) located in the United States (60%) and for medical professional education (54%). Videos for patient education tended to be shorter and newer than videos for medical professional education. The average JAMA score and PEMAT-A/V for patient education videos were 2 and 10.6, indicating low reliability and understandability, respectively. The average SPEQS score was 9.19. No videos for patient education explicitly described their intended audience.

Conclusions: Online videos for ESBS have limited reliability and understandability. Future videos should specify if they are intended for patient education. Videos created from different geographic locations may be beneficial to patients. The SPEQS appears to be a useful measure for assessing patient education video quality for conditions requiring surgery. Further studies are necessary to validate the tool.
