(464) Surgical Case Volume Differences Between Male and Female Otolaryngology Residents

Introduction: Equitable opportunities for all otolaryngology residents to gain surgical experience is paramount. Although the number of women in otolaryngology residency programs has steadily been increasing, whether they have similar surgical experiences as their male counterparts during training is unclear. This study aims to assess the difference in case number and factors associated with this difference in otolaryngology residency programs.

Methods: This retrospective, longitudinal analysis of resident case logs from US otolaryngology residency programs spanning from 2012-2022. Variables analyzed included mean volumes of 3 key indicator procedures (neck dissection, mastoidectomy, rhinoplasty), total procedures, resident gender, and maternity or paternity leave status.

Results: Female residents performed fewer total procedures compared with their male counterparts during the 10 year period studied.

Conclusions: Recognition of this disparity in experience is crucial for programs across the nation. Implementation of program case reviews may be beneficial to ensure that residents have comparable surgical training experiences regardless of gender.
