(104) Comparative Study: Objective and Subjective Analysis in Late Postoperative Adenotonsilectomy

Introduction: Avaluation of the impact of adenotonsillectomy surgery in the patient quality of life in the long term period using two complementary methods

Methods: This is a study observational retrospective and characterized by comparing the same population from November 2018 to November 2019. The sample consisted of volunteers submitted to adenotonsillectomy, aged between 3 and 16 years who had grade III or more palatine tonsil hyperplasia, pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia of at least 50% on cavum x-ray and/or presence of recurrent tonsillitis.
Patiens were evaluated using two complementary tools: Inspiratory Nasal Peak Flow (PFI) and OSA-18 (Obstructive Sleep Apnea questionnaire). The first one is a device used to measure the degree of nasal obstruction, evaluating the permeability of the nearby airways in a objective way and the second tool was a subjective assesment method that focuses on the impact of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in five domains.They were compared with each other using the Friedman test, with a significance level of 5%.

Results: Twenty-two patients were evaluated with PFI and OSA-18. Both were applied preoperatively,30 days postoperatively, 90 days and, finally,12 months after surgery.
In the 365-day postoperative period, the mean found for the PFI was 80.36 (SD 19.12) (p < 0000,1) and the OSA-18 was 25.14(SD=10.23) (p < 0000,1). The relationship between showed the existence of a correlation between the two, regardless of the moment, the higher the PFI measurement, the lower the questionnaire score, making it evident that the lower the nasal obstruction, the better the patient reports his quality of life

Conclusions: In view of the results obtained in the study, it was possible to conclude that the
vast majority of patients, after 1 year of undergoing surgery, had a significant increase in the result of the objective PFI assessment, which indicates an improvement in nasal respiratory capacity,and the subjective assessment score using the OSA-18 questionnaire was also lower, supporting the hypothesis that the surgical choice is affirmed as an essential tool to increase the quality of life of patients
